Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Irish customs clearance

Which system does Ireland use for imports?
Irish Revenue Commissioners process all import declarations through AIS (Automated Import System). AIS went live in 2020 and is fully aligned with the Union Customs Code. The legacy AEP system has been retired entirely.
How do I get an EORI number?
If your business is established in Ireland, EORI is activated via Revenue Online Service (ROS). Non-established businesses must apply as 'non-established traders' and usually need a fiscal VAT representative. The full process takes 3–5 working days and we manage it for you.
How long does clearance at Dublin Port take?
Declarations lodged before arrival (pre-lodged) are typically processed within hours. Consignments that receive 'green routing' in AIS are released without physical inspection. With correctly prepared declarations, average clearance is 2–6 hours.
What is Postponed VAT Accounting in Ireland?
Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) lets you self-account for import VAT on your bi-monthly VAT3 return — both as input and output VAT — so there's no cash outflow at the border. All VAT-registered businesses qualify automatically.
Are there customs controls between Northern Ireland and the Republic?
No — the Windsor Framework ensures no physical customs checks on the island of Ireland. However, goods of UK origin moving from Northern Ireland into the Republic follow the Green Lane / Red Lane rules. We assess your specific case.
What duty applies on imports from Turkey to Ireland?
Turkey is in a Customs Union with the EU. With EUR.1 or A.TR documentation, industrial goods (HS 25-97) clear at zero duty. Agricultural products follow specific preferential quotas. Irish VAT is 23% standard, with 13.5% or 0% reduced rates for some categories.
When is a T1 transit document needed?
T1 is used when non-EU origin goods move within EU customs territory under transit. Example: a Turkey-origin consignment passing through Ireland and the UK on its way to mainland Europe needs T1. The document is lodged in NCTS with a guarantor providing financial security.
How much does customs clearance cost?
We charge a flat fee per declaration. Separate tariffs apply for standard AIS imports, AES exports, multi-line consignments, transit documents and consultancy packages. Contact us via the form or phone for a tailored quote — no hidden fees.
